How Gus’s Solar Was Born

Gus Petrakis started this company in 2011 after watching a homeowner in San Jose get talked into a lease that made no sense for her roof, her bill, or her retirement. The sales rep had sat at her kitchen table for three hours, worn her down, and walked out with a signature she regretted by morning. Gus was there to fix a leak the previous installer had left behind, and he ended up spending more time explaining the contract she signed than repairing the flashing. That night he wrote down two rules on the back of an invoice: no pressure, and no job we wouldn’t put on our own mother’s house. Those two rules became the foundation for everything we’ve built since.

What bothered him most wasn’t just the bad deal. It was that nobody in the industry seemed embarrassed by it. Door-knocking crews cycled through neighborhoods, promised the moon, collected commissions, and vanished when the production numbers didn’t match the brochure. Gus wanted a different kind of company, one with a real name on the truck and a real person watching the monitoring portal after the install crew went home. So he built it himself. Today our locations serve homeowners across California, from San Jose and San Diego up through Sacramento, Modesto, Stockton, and into the Central Valley and Inland Empire. The model hasn’t changed since that kitchen table: bring us your bill, we’ll bring you the math, and nobody will ask for a signature tonight.

Gus Petrakis’s Personal Connection to the Solar Trade

Gus didn’t grow up planning to run a solar company. He came into the trade the way a lot of people find their calling: sideways, through the tradesman who trained him, a roofer who understood that every penetration through a shingle is a future leak waiting to happen. The first time Gus watched a solar array get flashed properly, he was up on a composition roof in summer heat, smelling the warm tar and feeling the granules under his boots, and the old guy beside him said something that stuck: “The sun is free, but the holes you drill aren’t. Flashing is where the real work is.” That sentence shaped the way Gus thinks about solar. Anyone can bolt panels to a roof. Doing it so it never leaks, never needs rework, and produces what the math says it should, that takes care and patience.

Over the years, that connection to the physical work deepened. Gus has spent mornings in crawl spaces checking wire runs, afternoons on roofs in hundred-degree heat torquing rail mounts, and evenings staring at monitoring dashboards trying to figure out why one string was underperforming. He knows what a properly flashed penetration looks like because he’s done the work himself, not because he read about it in a manual. What gets him out of bed is the same thing that kept him in the trade: the satisfaction of a clean install that performs exactly as promised, and the phone call to a homeowner whose panel went down, letting them know we already saw it and the fix is on the way. The monitoring portal catches a dead panel before the homeowner notices it on their bill. That kind of vigilance is just how we work. If Gus weren’t doing this, he’d probably be fixing old motorcycles in the garage and overthinking everything, which is basically what he does now, just with a permit and better insurance.

Meet Gus Petrakis - The Person Behind Every Job

Gus Petrakis is the Owner & Founder of Gus’s Solar. He started the company in 2011 after more than ten years working in and around the roofing and electrical trades, learning what makes a solar installation last and what makes one fail. His approach comes from hands-on experience rather than a sales script. He’s the one who models the quotes against real utility bills and current export rates, and he’s the one who demands that every roof penetration is flashed properly before a crew leaves the site. He puts his name on the work because he intends to be around to answer for it.

What separates Gus from the crew that knocks on your door and disappears is simple: he’s not going anywhere. The truck carries his own name, and he’s the kind of person who will run into you again on a Saturday. That’s the oldest accountability mechanism there is, and it works better than any warranty. His personal commitment to every customer is the same one he wrote down on that invoice back in 2011: no pressure, and no job we wouldn’t put on our own mother’s house. That isn’t a slogan. It’s the standard he holds himself to on every project, every quote, and every service call.

Our Promise to Homeowners

Our promise comes down to a few things, each one backed by how we actually operate, not by a marketing department. Honest pricing means we model your quote on your actual utility bill and the current export rates in your area. We don’t quote the day-one brochure number; we quote the year-25 output and tell you what the array will produce when the panels are ten years old and the inverter has been replaced. Quality parts means we install equipment we’d put on our own homes, like FranklinWH batteries, Tesla panels, and Enphase microinverters. Standing behind every job means the owner answers the phone and puts his name on the work. We’d rather keep you for twenty years than win one big ticket, and that’s the whole philosophy.

Our Credentials

Every pro working under the Gus’s Solar name is required to hold the licensing and insurance their state requires. We’re insured and bonded, and our installers carry the credentials to pull permits and do the work legally across California. Gus Petrakis has been in the solar and roofing trades since before he founded the company, so the experience isn’t new and it isn’t borrowed from a franchise manual.

  • State-licensed: Every location operates under the license required by its state, and we’re happy to show you our paperwork before any contract is signed.
  • Insured & bonded: We carry coverage so you’re protected while our crew is on your property.
  • Owner accountability: Gus Petrakis publishes his name on every job we take. That’s the most important credential we have.

Why does this matter to you? Because anyone hiring a contractor to work on a roof or tie into an electrical panel should see proof of license and insurance before the first day of work. It protects you if something goes wrong, and it signals that the company isn’t a fly-by-night operation. We show our paperwork up front because we’d want the same if the roles were reversed.

Rooted in the Communities We Serve

Gus’s Solar was born in San Jose, and we’ve grown by putting down real roots in the regions we serve across California: San Diego, Los Angeles, Fresno, Bakersfield, Sacramento, Modesto, Rocklin, Concord, Stockton, Riverside, and Redding. Each of our locations is an owner-operated business in the town it serves, hiring locally and buying locally where we can. The owners live where they work, they answer their own phones, and they’ll see you at the hardware store on a Saturday. That’s the L.O.C.A.L. code we run on: Local roots, On time, Community first, Accountable, Loyal. When you call Gus’s Solar, you’re calling a real business with an address in your county, not a call center three states over. Our live coordinator answers, takes your address, and connects you with the team that covers your area. It’s the setup we’ve run since 2011, and we don’t plan on changing it.
